Speak:

Following the publication of my debut memoir, High-Risk Homosexual, I have been sought out by institutions such as New York University, Stanford University, The University of Mississippi, The University of California, Lehman City College, Utah Humanities Book Festival, The L.A. Times Festival of Books, The Cisneros Hispanic Institute, and more for readings/talks.

Sample subjects:

  • Fuera Machismo!: Like many people who grew up in Latin communities, I came of age in a machista culture that elevated masculinity and shunned women, queer folks, and femininity. I didn’t begin to question machismo until I discovered my queerness and realized that the rewards offered to men who subscribed to toxic masculinity didn’t serve me. Even so, it took years for me to rid myself of the machismo ingrained in me from birth. This talk will unpack the history of machismo, the racist stereotypes associated with it that have been used to marginalize Latinx folk, and ultimately discuss why ending machismo is a project all men, queer or not, should be invested in.

  • For the Risky Memoirist: This talk will center the questions memoir-writers, especially those from marginalized backgrounds, must contend with when they first approach the page: Who is my intended audience? What is my responsibility in regards to representation? How do I deal with the tricky problem of telling my story when it involves other people? Will anyone even care what I have to say? Audiences will leave affirmed that their stories matter and with an understanding of what it takes to publish a memoir in the modern literary landscape.

Teach:

I’ve taught memoir-writing workshops and led retreats for Hugo House, Catapult, Tin House, The Writer’s Club, and the Lambda Literary Writer’s Retreat.

Recent classes (click for course page): “Writing Your Queer Life” and “Queering the Personal Essay.

"I really wasn't sure of myself walking into the class. But Edgar's encouragement really gave me the go-ahead to just get my ideas out on the page, in all their candid messiness, in a way that I haven't been able to accomplish otherwise. I've been talking to all my friends about what a cool and exciting time I had writing about the topics I did and getting the chance to experiment in new forms and formats. Our discussions about stories, whether an established author's or one another's, really forced me to sit down and break things apart more meticulously than I've been accustomed to doing. I'm so excited to keep returning to the tools I picked up in class—I already know they're gonna stick around for the long-haul!"
